WHAT WE THINK

We discuss issues that we face in today’s built environment. We also provide videos and explanations on how building design happens.

One Up- Two Over

Defy Design provided a contemporary design that included: adding a new second story, a two car garage, driveway, screened porch, and landscaping. Some of the team's goals were to provide a fresh look with clean lines, integrate the home well with the site, and balance new components with existing ones.

Let’s Go Up

Tucker began as a single story home in a great neighborhood.  The owners were about to have a child and needed more space. Adding on was out of the question, the house maximized the buildable footprint. They had two options to accommodate their growing family, move out or build up.  They went up. The design included a second story and a renovated street elevation. Through utilizing the area under the roof, we were able to provide an exciting design and hit their overall budget.

Old Bones in a New Home

Having the ability to see the potential in a project is a great one to have, and the owners of the Cloudland Canyon certainly have it.  They had a vision of converting an actual old barn into a modern farmhouse, and that’s exactly what we accomplished. Nestled on a mountaintop in Tennessee, this beautiful home has sliding barn doors to control the amount of light and heat enter the home, a real wood burning fireplace for cold winter nights, and windows carefully located for views into the surrounding landscape.  This home became a terrific retreat from city life, exactly what the owners had hoped for.

From Blah to Blam!

Dartmouth was a renovation project of an existing home.  Having sat vacant for many years, it was in rough condition. The home is at a visible intersection, but no one would have known there was a house behind the overgrown trees and shrubs.  The interior layout was broken into several small, cramped spaces with dated plumbing, electricity, heating and air.. The design transformed the home into a fun, modern place to live. Walls and ceilings were demolished, windows and doors changed, kitchen gutted, floors leveled and porches added.  In the end, a house appeared at this prominent location with unique and interesting curb appeal.

Yeah, but what about the view, can we see over the trees?

Connection to the surrounding landscape was one of the primary design drivers behind Lula.  On a steep site, the house was anchored to the side of a mountain with views of sweeping mountain ranges beyond and valleys below.  With three stories, plenty of height was provided to create a variety of visual experiences. The design blends modern form with craftsman texture, creating a warm, but sleek aesthetic .  Scheduled to be completed by 2022, we’re excited to see Lula come to life.

You’ve made it, and your kids are finally out of the house

It’s time to build the home you want to enjoy retirement. That’s exactly what the couple wanted out of this mid-century modern home.  They loved the look of mid-century modern, but needed a design to fit their budget and long term maintenance goals. That’s exactly what was provided.  From concept to full working drawings, design service was successfully delivered.
